Impromptu Originals is proud to introduce the extraordinary cinematic work of Fran Forman — an internationally celebrated visual artist whose haunting photo montages and staged imagery have earned recognition from major museums and photography institutions around the world. Her work now moves beyond the still image into cinema: dreamlike films where memory, authoritarian spectacle, identity, and human fragility unfold through painterly tableaux.
Beginning with Theatre of the Absurd, Forman explores how performance becomes compliance, how spectacle obscures truth, and how societies drift toward submission through ordinary rituals. Each frame is meticulously staged and transformed through post-photographic techniques into what Forman calls “photography that breathes.”
Winner and finalist at festivals spanning Amsterdam, Oslo, Philadelphia, Hamburg, Brooklyn, Vienna, Tokyo and beyond, Theatre of the Absurd signals the arrival of a singular filmmaking voice.
At Impromptu Originals, our commitment extends beyond restoration and rediscovery. We seek distinctive filmmakers and daring visual storytellers whose work cannot be mistaken for anyone else. Fran Forman belongs in that company.
Coming soon: features on Forman’s films, exclusive stills, festival updates, and conversations about the future of image making in the age of synthetic media.
